Re: Nur Ein IX- Round Zero
Do you have a good example of a song with a spoken word bridge for me to listen to?

At around 3:33, he stops singing and just starts talking before going back to the chorus. That's pretty much it.

Yes. Spoken word doesn't need to have any rhythm.Ross wrote:Spoken word is different than rapped, yeah?

The Ink Spots did spoken sections. Not sure they'd be considered a bridge though...
"Just a Man" Faith no More is the only real example I can come up with. It's great, too.

Older R&B enjoys employing the spoken word bridge.

I couldn't think of any offhand when the challenge was suggested, then by chance one came up on my playlist this morning. Albeit in another language, but still.

Awesome! I meet very few people who have even heard of Too Much Joy. They're one of those little "best-kept secret" bands, I suppose.ken wrote: Wow. I didn't realize we had that in common. TMJ is one of my favorite bands of all time.
I just thought of another slightly less obscure song with a spoken-work bridge:

Spoken word bridge.
Elvis' "Are You Lonesome Tonight", The Ink Spots "I Don't Want to Set The World On Fire". I would post links but I'm not permitted to as the site thinks I'm trying to post spam.

Re: Nur Ein IX- Round Zero
Last year, my challenge to myself was use tambourine in every song. I won my challenge.
This year, my self-challenge will be to use fake claps in every song.

If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

Re: Nur Ein IX- Round Zero
As I'm judging these, I will bear in mind that the challenge specifically calls it a "spoken word bridge." In my eyes, a song will have failed this challenge (or rather, passed it only on a technicality) if the bridge is not sufficiently distinct from the rest of the song. I cannot speak for how other judges will react to various interpretations of the challenge (and we haven't discussed this amongst ourselves, either), but I will probably want take you down a few ranks if the verses and/or choruses are spoken too.Rabid Garfunkel wrote:Finally, a challenge that's suited toward my "singing" style, heh.
I apologize if this information is too-little-too-late for any of you all. Take solace in knowing that there haven't been any Round 0 eliminations in several years.

What if I put my bridge at the beginning of the song?

Looks like we got us a hangin' judge!Generic wrote:As I'm judging these, I will bear in mind that the challenge specifically calls it a "spoken word bridge." Most of the songs hat I can recall that have spoken words bits, usually tend to be a verse rather than an 'bridge'. Someone mentioned 'Are You Lonesome Tonight' - I had assumed that that was the sort of thing the judges were getting at - but that is a spoken verse isn't it? (True - I don't really know what the definition of 'bridge' is. Musically anyway. As a civil engineer, I do have a reasonable understanding of its definition in other contexts.)
So Jon - would "Are You Lonesome Tonight" pass with you? (assuming Elvis was still alive, and playing Nur Ein, and he hadn't recorded it 60 years ago).
Not that it really matters to me in any way. By pure accident - my spoken word bit is definitely not a verse, and can I think be certainly considered a bridge. Or at least, a fairly substantial culvert.

Re: Nur Ein IX- Round Zero
More importantly- Is the music during spoken-word bridge in Nivs' example specifically different than the rest of the verses? If not that is a pretty serious contradiction in the criteria.
