The Weepies.
Massachusetts-based folk/pop duo. Boy/girl/guitar. She's like a less cynical Shawn Colvin and he's like a less wooden Captain to her Tennille. They write songs by the book and nail it each time. I'm running through their 2010 "By My Thrill" album right now. It gets a bit tiresome towards the end because they front-loaded all the heavy stuff. But the opening track "When I'm Gone" is easily a master class in songwriting: simple lyrics that say a lot, ambiguity vs. specificity in imagery, sprinkling in secondary dominants to keep the progression interesting and pull the bridge away from the home key just a touch. Just enough to make it sad without making it sound contrived. Careful and heartfelt and well-crafted and lovely.
Worth a listen, I think.
