Tearing History Down
by Lichen Throat
Thank you, Mr. Gorbachev,
For tearing down this wall.
No more concertina wire
And bright graffiti scrawl.
No need for a crowbar,
No more eastern blocks.
Unified Europa,
Free Czechs and Slovaks.
Tear history down; rebuild this town
With bars and fancy storefronts.
Reverse your frown; let sorrows drown.
Forget what this place was, once.
Next to Checkpoint Charlie
All the guards are gone.
Brand new strudel bakeries;
All I see is Cinnabon.
At the boutique counters,
Borrow to buy more.
Spend it all on souvenirs
Of the Cold War.
Tear history down; rebuild this town
With bars and fancy storefronts.
Reverse your frown; let sorrows drown.
Forget what this place was, once.
Ich bin ein Berliner;
Release the luftballoons.
Send a man to space and then
Return him from the moon.
Say goodbye to Lenin;
Let Honecker resign.
Demolish Spandau Prison
So it can’t become a shrine.
Tear history down; rebuild this town
With bars and fancy storefronts.
Reverse your frown; let sorrows drown.
Forget what this place was, once.

Re: Tearing History Down
you can trust me
I'll hold your cash
keeping it safe from
the impending crash
I am the guru
they speak balderdash
just follow me in, you will see
I never said
the words that I said
you might have heard it
but that's in your head
lies can be true
but truth may be dead
just follow me in, you will see
tearing down history
will finally set us free
nothing before
nothing again
there's only now
there's only now
there's only now
tearing history down
will make this town same from clowns
tearing history down
just follow me in, you will see
tearing down history
will finally set us free
nothing before
nothing again
there's only now
there's only now

Tearing History Down
Well, you failed to mention
how I hurt you at the time
despite all my good intentions
you've accused me of a crime
Since we lack a consensus
we're unpacking the mystery
though it may be sordid
we're going to sort it all out
we're seeing with hindsight
you look at me quizzically
the math doesn't add up
tearing history down
I'm getting lost in declension
because you're so damn re-nouned
there's no release of the tension
because there is no out of bounds
Since we lack a consensus
we're unpacking the mystery
though it may be sordid
we're going to sort it all out
we're seeing with hindsight
you look at me quizzically

I never doubted it was true
If you won’t learn from history
It just repeats on you
But all the same it must be said
We sure spend a lot of time
Discussing our days with the dead
History can’t quite be history
until it’s firmly in the past
Remembrance will turn to necrocracy
When with ghosts we stand steadfast
Sins of our fathers will persist
While our forebears hang around
Their mode of thought can’t be dismissed
Make room for what we’ve learned since then
Get started tearing history down
Don’t make the same mistakes again
The past contains much that should not be forgotten
Meaning derives from both beautiful and rotten
Give us some credit—I swear I’d still recall
Heroes and villains without their corpses in the hall

They're tearing history down
And it's falling without a sound
The lessons we learned we don't understand
Fighting's breaking out wherever it can
Yeah, they're tearing history down
And it's falling onto the ground
They're taking away our memory
Trying to erase all our history
They're tearing history down
Well, it's not easy, you see
To teach the lessons we need
Doesn't help to fight, we gotta get along
Learn to be civil whether right or wrong
It doesn't matter what they say
We've gotta learn from yesterday
A statue ain't nothing but what you see
It's our hearts and minds that we must reach
They're tearing history down
And it's falling without a sound
The lessons we learned we don't understand
Fighting's breaking out wherever it can
Yeah, they're tearing history down
And it's falling onto the ground
They're taking away our memory
Trying to erase all our history
They're tearing history down
Seems to me we need reminded every now and again
Of all the mistakes made in the past
Just because some folk admire some of those men
It doesn't have to mean those sins will last
They're tearing history down
And it's falling without a sound
The lessons we learned we don't understand

Tearing History Down

All that you wanted
was not to do it again
losing your loved ones
and losing your friends
What have you got into?
Nothing that bears repeating
Now that you’re stuck in the muck
you’re hoping this moment’s fleeting
I knew it all along,
it would have an effect on me
Whether it’s right or wrong
I’d rather not wait and see
This place used to be my town
all these ghosts still hanging around
build the future up from the ground
that’s why I’m tearing history down
Have they absconded
With all of your worth?
Your sense of belonging
is down in the dirt.
Now that you’ve come undone
you’re tempted to scorch the earth
Everything looks unfun
and you’re slipping from bad to worse
You knew it all along
and proceeded cautiously
Whether it’s right or wrong
you’d rather not wait and see
Nothing ever lasts forever
Is there a score to settle
Forgetting is a luxury
Going forth, try not to meddle
We knew it all along
and went forth foolishly
It was less right than wrong
Now we’re here let’s look and see
This place used to be my town
Nothing ever lasts forever
All these ghosts still hanging around
Is there a score to settle
Build the future up from the ground
Forgetting is a luxury

Tearing History Down - Paco del Stinko
Deleting the past and re-building anew, even your brother's got an angle on you
The spoils belong to the victor, or perhaps even wannabe Hilters
(You don't want to be that guy)
Are you wearing your misery frown
While they're tearing history down
Have many times have you been passed by
Feel the boot ease off of your neck, so you can swallow it all
And after you digest it, the truth can't be recalled
(You don't want to be that guy)
They're changing the story
To force the agenda
No back-spacing now
No returning to the sender
Deleting the past and re-building anew, even your brother's got an angle on you
The spoils belong to the victor, or maybe a wannabe Hilter
(You don't want to be that guy)
Then we take it back and re-write it
Then we take it back and (What's the difference)
But really, what's the difference now
Deleting the past and re-building anew, even your brother's got an angle on you
The spoils belong to the victor, or perhaps even wannabe Hilters

Bringin' the stink since 2006.
