Sort of... an iPhone 3GS and an iPhone 4. :) Got plenty of mic clamps that would hold them if I wanted to get all tripod-standy. What camera did y'all use? What video editing software? Would you describe how you went about it? It looked like it was pretty laid back and fun to do. Where's your jam space? Is that one of the new Rhodes? If so I'm more than a bit jealous :) Yay glowing blue eBow LED!

Ok, gotta do something like this, it just looks like too much fun.

Camera- Sony HD 60GB hard drive: I will NEVER use a camera with a secondary media ever again. Too many tapes eaten, discs scratched etc. I've been using this camera to make our BSS videos, chronicle Song Fight Live events, Carpet Burn and Balance Lost shows..... Just get HD (hard not to these days) and go hard drive.

Editing Software- I couldn't get into Final Cut Pro, but I will give it another shot someday. I'm becoming an Apple person, after years of resistance. The Software I use is Sony Vegas. It's very intuitive, the only drawback is you can create some awesome memory intensive effects and quadruple imagery etc that you will Never render, because it's too memory intensive. I'm at 8GB of RAM, 2GB was miserable. I think I need like 100 GB of RAM to be totally free. More memory the better.,

Going about it- It's best if you get the camera rolling while you're recording, that makes the lip syncing perfect, because you're not. This is especially true for guitar solos. For me anyway, I always improvise solos. We didn't do that this time. "Looking at the Sea" and "Cakes" have the solos that were recorded for the song captured on video. When you are lip-syncing, it's best to actually sing. When I'm matching up video to the master song I do it with audio so actual vocals is really nice. Initially I synced to the video monitor, but it lags and you'll be lucky to make a drum fill look right if you do it visually. We've also learned that the more of a fool you make of yourself the more fun it is to watch. Staying cool makes for boring video, so we like to express our inner idiot.

Jam Space- We're in Oakland California at Jack London Rehearsal Studios. (close to Yoshis)

Rhodes- Don't think it's new, maybe Lunkhead or Ken can chime in on that.

Ebow- Some call me Ebow Phillips...... I can go on for a ridiculously long time about the Ebow. I adore using it, I have 3, I've been known to use 2 at a time (B string and A string)... anyway E-bows rule!

iphone video cameras- Sony Vegas will use those video files. I've been known to use iphone shots in our videos. It's smaller resolution, but looks great still! You start to feel it when you watch on your flat panel TV, but for ipad viewing or whatever it's fine.

It'd be fun to edit someone else 's performance, if you want some one to edit together a video from footage you shoot, I'd be game. send me a PM and we can talk details if you're interested.

That makes total sense. I dig what Pomplamoose does, their "If you see it, you hear it, and if you hear it, you'll see it somewhere in the video" ethos.

That rehearsal space looks pretty sweet! I'm lucky that Mallory's cool with the drums, amps, PA, snake, mic cables, stands, acoustic foam crammed here and there, etc taking over the living room... but there are definitely times when I'd like to have all that stuff set up - and always set up - in another room somewhere. I get tired of breaking stuff down and setting it back up so often. I checked out the space's website - love the idea of vending machines full of energy drinks and guitar strings. :) I don't think there's anything comparable around here. I know two bands that practice in storage units, but damn, they're both pretty loud, and I don't think I could handle jamming in a corrugated steel box.

Found out that our drummer has a camera, think it's an HD hard drive camera, and I foresee a Longfellow Street video in the hopefully near future - and I'll remember what you said about editing! Collaborations kick ass. Just got a phone call from our drummer in Jacksonville, he's working on "All Kinds Of Sorrow", might help him with some bass and lyrics. Gonna make him sing it though, he's got a great voice.

eBow Forever! Two at a time, mwahaha that's pretty gnarly.

Peace,
Trey

Thanks Glenn, that means a lot coming from you. Dee is a great singer and so pro to work with. Our Psychotics project has been a lot of fun and we work together so easily. Although not on this song, Paco is part of a lot of the BATP songs. ;)

I sucked on it but enjoyed it a lot. I said once that I'd really like to re-do this song and do it justice. It's such a great melody. Maybe I can talk Tweedle Dee and Chaz Stinko into a remake if you want to do a collab sometime.

I’m on a lyric posting crusade this week. If you didn’t post yours, shame on you.

AntBut
Mellow. I feel like it could use something like an electric guitar under the chorus. Nice sound, though. Won’t comment on lyrics since you didn’t post them. It sounds maybe a little too earnest.

Berkeley Social Scene
Won’t comment on lyrics since you didn’t post them. The “it always gets better” part sounds pretty awkward, but the rest of the chorus works. That part just takes me out of the groove, though. Maybe it should be a different line. Or sung differently.

Billy & The Psychotics
Love how the instruments come in. And the vocal, that’s great. The chorus kicks up in the right way. “she doesn’t know this is the last time but she doesn’t know it” doesn’t work, but that’s not actually what you sang! Ok then! This is great and gets a vote.

The Chocolate Chips
I like the synthy sounds especially that pad at :31. That vocal effect isn’t working for me, though, it seems kind of goofy and not fitting with the song’s mood. Won’t comment on lyrics since you didn’t post them.

Jon Eric
Your “except” lines work well to turn around the message of the title. I like how you changed them up each time also. And the tissues line is good. I think the vocal could be more present, but it’s enjoyable.

Longfellow Street
Won’t comment on lyrics since you didn’t post them. I’m digging the groove and vocal style, not a common one here at the SF. Can’t tell what’s being said in the whispery part. Vote! Synthy freakout at the end is a nice touch.

Paco del Stinko
I guess this title led itself to lines that were hard to sing. This one sounds a bit awkward too. I enjoy the music a good bit. Especially the guitars.

Pillar of Paprika
These lyrics were inspired by a Lovecraft story, but it’s not so much about that story any more. I feel like it’s more there to set the mood. I love the wall-of-guitar soundscapes tik made for us.

The Real Sign
Won’t comment on lyrics since you didn’t post them. This song kind of irritated me the last time I heard it, because the one-line chorus got itself stuck in my head but the rest of the song disappeared, so I just had a single line repeating… bleh. Pretty good song, but because of aforementioned problem I won’t vote for it.

Ross Durand
Won’t comment on lyrics since you didn’t post them. This one needs to be brighter… it sounds very muffly to me, especially after the paws track. I’m really enjoying that solo.

roymond
Won’t comment on lyrics since you didn’t post them. I like the wah guitar a lot. Lots of nice sounds here. Same awkward title problem. I feel like it reminds of me XTC or something. Vote.

sausage
Weird that you are changing your rhyme scheme on different stanzas. Pretty good, I tap my foot. Vox aren’t quite up to the calisthenics you’ve set out for.

The Tiny Paws of Fury
Won’t comment on lyrics since you didn’t post them. Enjoying the odd cadence of this thing. Funky instrumentation and the abrupt ending, good stuff. Vote.

Tuners Union
Won’t comment on lyrics since you didn’t post them. The intro isn’t doing it for me, but it gets better (get it?) when the banjo comes in. The vocals seem a little forced on the part I’m assuming is the chorus. But the bridge part where it goes all staccato and then long is very cool. I’m sort of on the fence about this one, but I’ll toss ya a vote.

You know, I honestly didn't know there was a place to post lyrics! Apologies, will try to get that up there. The whispery part is intentionally backwards masked, because Ryan's lyrics were foul. He's a sarcastic sorta twisted bastage sometimes. :) Thanks for the vote! The synthy freakout part was super fun, that's a little Korg Monotron... looks like a toy, but it's a real single-oscillator analog synth with a nice filter.

Between my lyrics being rather clear in the mix and not being terribly deep, I figured posting wasn't really necessary. This week, however, they will be bound and properly archived for scrutiny.

Rankings are based on if I would play it on my radio show (if I still had it) normally, would use it in the "What do these songs have in common" game (not normally played, but still good), or wouldn't play it. Normal plays get votes. Everyone else gets brownies. Bonus ranking of "Request Line" if I think it'd be popular/requested by my listeners.

Berkley Social Scene
I like the echoey effect on the vocals, but I think the backing track kind of drowns out the singer. Had to look up your lyrics because the chorus (especially the 3rd line) sounded a lil garbled. But I just couldn't help bopping my head along with it. Love the synths. Honestly, the synths/keyboards were my favorite part of the song. Ranking: Song game.

Sausage
Like the guitar, like the singing, but wish the vocals didn't sound like you were recorded in a bathroom. Far too echoey/distorted. It takes away from how awesome the song is! Ranking: Normal Play if the distortion went away.

Pilar of Paprika
Cute band name made me giggle. Ooh, me likey. Sounds like the mellow/groovy goth I play a lot. Can't find much I don't like, though the vocals could be turned up a tick. (I hate when I can't hear the singer clearly.) Ranking: Normal Play

Real Sign
Very different. Simple plan worked out wonderfully. Doesn't sound like you suffered from musical feature creep, like I can get. Love the lady's voice, but that guy who you hear at the start of the first chorus? Fits it the mood of the song perfectly. Wish it was used more than the one time. Ranking: Normal Play

Jon Eric
Damn, you're good at the piano. I can't even play my scales right, but I'm jealous. Sounds like you're reaching a bit for the high notes, but it works. Like it add's desperation to the character, with a little bit of schadenfreude like humor. Ranking: Normal Play

Tiny Paws of Fury
Band name worries me.. Did y'all name yourselve's after my cat?? Anyways. I honestly don't know how I feel about this song. Part of me wants to really like this song. But part of me is like "Meh." That weird cello-ish bass thing going on on the single note is distracting. Ranking: Song Game

Antbut
Ooh, slow dance song. I think I love every bit of this song. Something is off about the harmony on the chorus, but it could just be me. Ranking: Normal Play

Ross Durand
Aww, I normally like your stuff, but this song is so sweet. This is a perfect breakup song. Wait. Organ solo? Really? That's so cool! Okay, definate Ranking: Normal Play

Billy and the Psychotics
"She smells like candy & melts all over you"?? Where do you guys come up with this stuff? Loving the vocals, loving the bongos. Hell, I just love it all. Can't find a damned thing wrong with it. Ranking: Normal Play, Request Line

Chocolate Chips
Not a fan of this one. Sorry. The singer has a nice voice, but that's the only thing I like. Honestly, I think if you had done a slightly longer song, I might have liked it better. But with how short it is, you didn't have a chance to let your voice sink in. Ranking: Song Game

Roymond
Odd song. Liking it, but I don't know. Something just feels off. Maybe it's the harmonies throughout the whole song? Liking the weird chatter in the background during the instrumental bit. Reminds me of Neuroticfish advertising for ad space in one of their songs. Ranking: Song Game, but might be an occaisional "Play it for the hell of it" track

Tuners Union
Damn. Loved the first half. Then whoa. Yeah, I hate you. You're too damned good. Ranking: Normal Play, Request Line

Paco Del Stinko
Cute chorus. 2nd gothy song so far, and you're pulling the old school "Singy talk verse" and have the voice to actually pull it off. Niiiiiice. Ranking: Normal Play, possible Request Line

Longfellow Street
Loving the groove. Saw your band name and was like "Yay! The girl who sings like the Ditty Bops!" then you pull this jazzy funky thing out and I unhooked my headset and blared it, scaring the cat out of the room. I can picture babies being made to this, or due to this song. And the ending is cool. Ranking: Normal Play, Request Line
"A pounding beat that makes me pump fist, that makes me smile like I've just been kissed."

Tuners Union
The production on this is fantastic! The acoustic sounds amazing! The banjo is killer also! Drums sound great! Vocals are crazy good. I don't like the telegraphed rhyme : " ......Let her!", ".....better!". Is that a female backing vocalist? I dig the "Ain't No sunshine When she's gone" : "I know, I know,....". I love the funky breakdown musically, the vocals make me cringe a bit, but I admire the ambition. I just listened to your back catalog. You've always had good songs, but wow you really stepped up your production skills on this one! Impressive! The solo section on this song is great! I love the production and the performance, but the song just isn't speaking to me, I want to like it more than I do. What's wrong with it? Not much at all. I hope the production values keep up, I'm sure there will be a song that gets to me one of these fights. Normally I'd vote for this, but in such a strong fight, I'm holding back.

The Tiny Paws of Fury
Oh I miss that Casio! This is clearly J$, who else is in the band? I really like the riffs! This would be a fun angular groove to get Frippy over. I like how short and sweet this is, but I think the ending could have been written a little stronger, the stop is effective, but a little bit of a let down. I love these quirky little tunes in my i-phone playlist. This is a keeper. Not sure about the vote in such a strong fight. Still considering it. Would normally vote for this.

sausage
I dig the rock power! The vocalist really sells it and is the best part. What I don't like about the song writing is the main riff. It's a good riff, it sounds a lot like a sped up version of "Optimistic" by Radiohead, but then there isn't another riff for the pre-chorus or chorus to juxtapose to it to keep it as strong as it could have been. The drums have good energy. Oh wow! Great solo man! I wish the solo was louder in the mix. Exceptionally good ending to the solo, I like how the drums and guitar hit those accents together to wrap it up! Another song that I would normally vote for, but I'm holding back because the fight is so strong.

roymond
Oh man! This is soooo Crimson! Is that a zoom pedal effect I detect? The weakest link in the vocals. They are alright, but sometimes feel a bit unsure. It's a timing thing, all the instruments are so tight and complicated, then the vocals sound like they needed another take in parts. I like your voice and delivery, I just think another take may have been in order. These riffs are so delicious and inventive, and full of good vitamins, tri-tones, and fun time sigs. This has been my most listened to track from this fight. Yes you get a vote, it's not flawless, but the good parts are so very good. I love it!

Ross Durand
Okay, the intro is rather Bad Company "Feel like Makin Love". Your voice is awesome! I love the performance! I really really hate these lyrics. You often live and die by your lyrics, I will bring your name up when people ask about the best lyricists on Song Fight. This however is everything I hate about lyrics. I see you didn't post your lyrics, you must not have been proud. You know I love you man,but just because you use the "they say...." mantra doesn't mean I want to hear those cliche's. Then the summation line that you're relying on for your cleverness is probably the biggest cliche' from all song writers" yadda yadda yadda, but they ( dont know, haven't lost, never seen, been with) you. This is nice to listen to if I can A) stop singing the Bad Company song, B) manage to ignore the lyrics. I think I know the solution. If you sang this in French, it would be profound. All that said, I really like the melody. The organ kicking in is really cool too.

The Real Sign
The production leaves something to be desired. It's a lot quieter than all the competition. The rapping sounds like Madonna in the "Vogue" song. I don't think the rap was a good choice. The flow is not there. It takes what is mostly speech and then invokes awkward stresses. Is the opposite of groovy ridgy? I will call the rap vocals ridgy. The lyrics are wrought with cliche's too. I really dig the chorus, and the backing vocalist. The music is pretty cool in an incubus/ linkin park kind of way. I imagine Linkin Park might do a kick ass cover of this. Nice playing. The song isn't that long, but it kinda feels long. I think maybe more development from one verse chorus to the next verse chorus would help. Oh and the ending is cut too abrupt. I think it needs a long fadey noisy ending like "Climbing up the Walls". Some good ideas, but doesn't work as a whole for me. Perhaps I should claim genre bias, but I think with some tweaks I would have liked this.

Pillar of Paprika
Nice moody intro. This is really cool. This sounds like a B-Side from Earth,Sun, Moon. Love and Rockets fan? The E-bow is tasteful. I like the alternative plodding bass line. The dynamics are good in the music, but the vocals stay David Jay. This is ambient enough that it feels super short, I look at the time and I expect 90 seconds, but it's a full 3:14. I like this a lot. This gets a vote. I really like the shoe-gazy atmosphere this creates. Good stuff!

Paco del Stinko
This is not flawless PDS, but it has many of the strengths I've come to know and love. The verses are very strong. The production is awesome. I LOVE the bass line and especially the bass tone. I think the chorus isn't as strong as it should be. It just isn't that catchy. The bridge is really strong. I really love the solos. Nice strong ending. Not one of my PDS favorites, but certainly vote worthy! VOTE!

Longfellow Street
By principle, I don't want to vote for this. Playing a 12-bar is not song writing. That music is for musicians who are meeting for the 1st time. It's for a live setting. Hell, maybe it's for a video, or a movie vignette. There needs to be something else to hold my attention. I hate knowing the map ahead as a listener. It also traps the lyrics into a lot of repeats. All that said, this is awesome. The song is too long, but the singing is stellar! That female vocalist is awesome! The production is incredible! What instruments are real, which are fake? You guys are great players! I love all the bloops and bleeps too. The guitar tone is great too. I like the solo. I think the sax is the best part. Maybe her vocals are the best part. The lyrics are fine, but nothing special poetically. The vocals are good too. Repeated listens are difficult and have diminishing returns due to the 12-bar factor. I am going to give this a vote, I think the production and the playing s that good.

Jon Eric
This is beautiful. The subtle double bass is a great touch, or is it cello? Anyway, I love the piano playing. This is clearly not played with a click, and I think that’s to its merit. The dynamics are great. I don’t like the “forget ‘er”- “…better”, ..”wetter” rhyme. This is a really strong song. I have to say, this deserves a vote. It says a lot in a short amount of time and doesn’t overstay its welcome. Bravo! Vote.

The Chocolate Chips
This is really cool. This hits that Ween Mollusk note rather well. Unfortunately, it seems to be a couple ideas short of a complete song. What’s there is grand, but it’s way too short. The vocals sound a little unsure, especially in the verse. I think you ran out of time maybe? The effects are cool. Nice job! More song next time please.

Billy & The Psychotics
This intro is nice, but I have to say when the strutting riff kicked in I was taken for a left turn. The dynamics are awesome. DJ is kicking ass on the vocals! The riffs are huge. I do miss a PDS kick ass solo, but the breakdown is nice anyway. I could stand for this to be longer, preferably with a solo. I still yearn for some Billy background vocals. The DJ harmony touches are good! The production is great. I have no idea what the lyrics are and I don’t really care. The melodies are great! Great performance! VOTE!

AntBut
This is a pretty song. The drum machine is a little grating. The hiss factor is pretty bad. The piano sprinklings are great. This song is so positive I feel like I’m watching Fame, and Bruno is cheering up Julie with a little number he wrote to make her feel better about that episodes conflict. This is a well written song structure and chord wise. This lacks all rock. Well done, I’m just not that into it. Way too mellow and safe and positive to be exciting.

Berkeley Social Scene
I’m really proud of this one. This was collaboration at its best. I originally wrote this in 7/8, but I couldn’t make convincing demo drums, so I acquiesced to 4/4 to finish the demo to present to the band. Originally the chorus was another vocal call and music response section, like the verse and pre-chorus. Ken and Martin voted against that chorus and we tweaked it in to what it is. Also Martin came up with the tweak that is the vocal hook to me. “Hide in your room like a leper” became “hide in your room, hide like a leper”. That little tweak made all the difference in the world. That session I did the rhythm guitar and we were a power trio. Ken overdubbed the Rhodes, and I overdubbed the lead guitar bits and the E-bow solo. Ken did a fantastic production job on this one. Once the Rhodes was there the vibe of the song totally reminded me of “Touch of Gray” by the Grateful Dead. Shooting the video was super fun. Martin and I turned 40 in February and we dressed in light shirts and ties, I thought it looked good, so that was our “look” for the video. Ken and I brought a few hats and we had fun. I love the low harmonies. I especially love the solo section with the Rhodes and bass doubling (tripling) the riff. I am voting for us.

Strong fight! I liked them all!

We wanna be on the radio! Mallory got a kick out of the Ditty Bops reference. :) Thankye.

BSS - I really liked your video, and it made me go back and listen to the song more. Amazing how the frame of reference can crystallize when you see the people who are making the video. You guys looked like you had such a good time it made me like what you were doing that much more. Like I said before, it made me wanna go out and do the same thing, and that's super-high praise in my book o' life.
Playing a 12-bar is not song writing.
24-bar, yo! ;) Exxxxtennnnnded blues jam. 12-bar is so passé. Wait, what am I saying?? IT'S THE BLUES DUDE! DON'T YOU BLASPHEME IN HERE! IT'S LIKE CLASSICAL MUSIC! YOU MUST HATE MOZART! YOU KILLED BEETHOVEN!

You're totally right about it being what people play when they first meet and jam. I humbly ask that you go listen to You Believed It Yourself, that one's got interesting chords and even a 2/4 measure thrown in just to mess with other musicians who wanna learn it. Ok, not really, that's not why, but that's the effect it has. This was for a party, for everyone to be able to jam really easily over, so I accept the critique - also, I flat out stole the form from "Down Home Girl", which is what I happened to be listening to when this all got started, so who am I to complain!?!? - while begging for points for me - as the evening's MC, so to speak - for putting things in a framework that everyone could have fun with at a party without thinking too hard. Same story with the not quite poetry lyrics. I didn't want people freezing up about writing something with depth and feeling, I wanted them to have fun scribbling something silly on paper while they drank and listened to other people jam. It worked, except for the offensive "Shitting your pants and killing your dad" bit I got from Ryan. So I ran that backwards. Mwahaha.
What instruments are real, which are fake?
No fake instruments! That's my slightly out of tune Lester spinet piano, my Ibanez hollowbody, Ryan's Tele, Donna's other Ibanez hollowbody with crybaby wah, all through my Fender Blues Jr, a Korg Monotron, a metal kazoo, Irwin's sax (doubled, it's true, but that's editing, not sampling...), Ross playin' my Gretsch drum kit, I'm playing a jazz bass and the ukelele and a shaker in the last verse. Oh wait, shit, dammit, kick me in the head, there is a sample of a TR-808 kick in there. But only one sample, and it only hits three leetle times. :)
All that said, this is awesome. The song is too long, but the singing is stellar! That female vocalist is awesome! The production is incredible! What instruments are real, which are fake? You guys are great players! I love all the bloops and bleeps too. The guitar tone is great too.
Thank you. Mallory's a great vocalist, and I looove playing with these guys. The bloops and the bleeps were so much fun to mess with... I bought the Monotron and it's been sitting around, adored but unrecorded, until this. Makes me very happy to get it out and do analog synth magic/madness with it. People keep coming back to the guitar tone, here and in the Real World... it's that Blues Jr, man. 15 watt tube amp, 12" speaker, an SM57 up on the cloth and someone with good guitar technique, crank the gain just enough to push the tubes just a bit... it's a magical combination.

glenny wrote: Oh I miss that Casio!

No-one else in the band, TPF is my AAD side. This song was written under strict rules (from idea to mixing in no more than 2 hours). The reason for the re-emergence of the TPF after four years is very shortly going to become clear. In the meantime you *could*, if you were so inclined, check out http://www.datehorse.com for further elucidation, I'll take a keeper over a vote every time. I am ridiculously proud of this song, despite the fact (realised after the fact) that a large part of its melody is unconsciously half-inched from "The beat goes on"

Two minor points: the bass instrument is a cello, and in fact the song is played with a click. I wonder what made you think otherwise?

Thanks for the comments, and for the vote!!

glennny wrote: Oh man! I love it!
I only had two hours...that's my excuse. I like this more and more as it ages, though, so I think it will be getting some additional attention at some point. The vocal tracks are literally first and second takes, so no wonder it's a little loose. All the words/phrases are from Twitter, a resource I use when I need quick inspiration, but nothing revolutionary. Happy to use the mandolin i bought in Mexico years ago. All effects are from Logic. I don't use pedals, for better or worse. I'm glad you like the 6/7/5 meters...

Yeah, I always forget how low a cello can go.
As far as the click goes, I was trying to pay you a compliment. When I listen to it there seems to be tension and release not only in chords, volume dynamics, but in being ahead and behind the beat as well. I busted out my tap tempo and locked in to the cello. I'm pretty sure if there is a tempo it's 90 bpm. When I restarted the song with 90 bpm click, there seemed to be dramatic pauses that threw off the beat. Maybe I just had the wrong bpm. In any case this song has very high replay value. I haven't liked it any less on these repeated listens.
