Re: 10th Annual Gift of Music
I totally forgot to check out GoM this year - my bad. If we're past the deadline, we can probably do a stiffee's song. Otherwise, I'll confer with Al and make some song suggestions.
I did want to thank DJ Ranger Den and Chris Cogott for jumping in and de-stiffing us from 2010, as well as furrypedro for the 2011 song. Both were awesome in the musical and creative sense.

Re: 10th Annual Gift of Music
OK.
I have never missed a GOM (stats monkeys? how many of us are there?)
But this is the HARDEST one yet.
1. I have one song I hate.
2. One song I don't really get at all
3. One I quite like, and is easy to play - but I don't think I can do much value-adding to it. Doing it would feel like a bit of a cop-out, and
4. And one song I like quite a lot, but is it quite frankly beyond my musical capabilities.
Of course - I am doing #4.
And bear this in mind Giftee - when you find out who you are - I am damning your eyes right now Sir. Damn your eyes.

Re: 10th Annual Gift of Music
I like my giftee's picks quite a lot. The one I like best and want to do has one word in it I don't like. I'm funny this way. One simple damn word can make me dislike an entire perfectly awesome song. In this case, the word is in the chorus. So I have to keep saying it. It's not a bad word, nor racist or anything like that. It's a word that will make me sound like an old lame dorky man. Like yelling at kids to get off my lawn. ....in a non sarcastic way.
....maybe if I sing the song in a Humphrey Bogart voice, I'll feel better about it. I'll be all.....

Re: 10th Annual Gift of Music
@ Caravan -- sometimes attempting to bring dignity to a terrible song can be an interesting cover exercise! You might go that route. (And if you have my songs, you are WRONG, sir! They are all fabulous!)
@BLT -- I say just change the word!

That's not a bad idea, actually. After all, I am a rebel without a clue. I break 10 rules before breakfast. I'm not part of the man's system. Guess what I did with that word!? ......anti-m wrote:@BLT -- I say just change the word!

i like all my options, the real problem is choosing which one to do, and they are all beyond my musical capabilities.

So change the word. It's a cover, not a copy.Billy's Little Trip wrote:I like my giftee's picks quite a lot. The one I like best and want to do has one word in it I don't like. I'm funny this way. Or do it like it's an old man trying to fit in with a world to which he doesn't belong. Let the music reflect that. It's all theatre, at the end of the day.
I have four songs that I like, but don't feel particularly inspired by, I think because none of them immediately suggest how I'm going to bring something new to the table. My problem. So I am going for the one that people would most expect me to do, only I am going to buy a random instrument I can't play and work it out on that.
Some of the above may not be true.

Re: 10th Annual Gift of Music
Ok - let me be the fist to apologise to my gifteee.
This song was way beyond my level of musical competency - but I reckon I gave it a fair crack. I hope you realise how much it pained me to go beyond the sort of 3 chord songs I am comfortable with. THough I did all I could to drag this song down to my level.
