Nur Ein XIII Round Seven "The End"
Re: Nur Ein XIII Final Round "The End"
Hey Mike and Ben, thanks as always for the podcast. I didn't think you could get an hour show out of 5 songs, but you did.
Ben - there are direct flights from JFK but they'll run you 1000-2000 US$. That's pretty pricey for a slap.
The vocals - maybe it's desperation? I knew I was working until 2 am, and only had a small recording window... I really don't know what I did different, but I keep trying to improve.
Tommy - Thanks for posting the theme song and ids, and for hosting the listening party. It's always a fun time.

Re: Nur Ein XIII Final Round "The End"
Wow. My mind is blown. I was really starting to think this would never happen, that we would be the perpetual also-ran. And it only barely happened this time. Fantastic job on your final song and all your entries, Vom, you were an extremely worthy competitor, and it was really a toss up at the end. I'm sure if you come back it will take you a lot fewer tries to win the whole thing than it took us.
We also struggled with this final title, coming up with and discarding idea after idea for being too bleak and depressing. It was hard to think of a subject for "The End" given the state of the world and some things we've had going on in our personal lives lately without feeling bummed out, especially while also feeling extremely depleted and fatigued from Nur Ein. Huge credit to Erin for finally coming up with the idea for this last song, and for all her lyric writing and singing and arranging and everything. I'm very lucky to get to work with her. <3
And thank you to the organizers and judges and contestants. Nur Ein is a highlight for us every year when we get to participate. Although tbh I don't know if I'll ever feel like I need to do it again now.
Now we are going on vacation for a week and the timing could not be better.
EDIT: Also Vom I moved your post here from the "(no comments)" thread, hope you don't mind.
EDIT EDIT: Also congrats to Erin on being the first woman Nur Ein winner!!

Re: Nur Ein XIII Final Round "The End"
I don't mind, thanks! The excitement got the better of me.
I'm certainly tempted to have another go next year - the competitive format definitely got me to raise my game. I'm really happy with this batch of songs and I'm planning to polish them a little bit and stick them on bandcamp as a mini-album in the near future as they're the best things I've come up with in ages.
Thanks to the judges, everyone who voted in the final round and to Ben and Mike for the podcast (and Boffo for the listening parties), as they really helps this feel like an exciting event I think!
REALLY looking forward to not working on any music this weekend, ha.

Congrats, Merisan. Congrat's Vom. It was a great battle, a great Nur Ein which the three of you dominated.
Sam and Erin, enjoy your vacation.
Vom, see you over at fiftyninety after you recover.

Congratulations, Merisan! It was well deserved. And congrats Vom on making it so far! Thank to you both (and everyone else) for making such great music these past two months! It’s been a pleasure playing in such good company!

Congrats Merisan! I've been a big fan of your music since the "Welcome to ___" fight over 12 years ago.
From spoken word to actual singing, I can screw up any style with style.

Re: Nur Ein XIII Final Round "The End"
Oops, I didn't think the judges voted in the final round. I've been working at Cub Scout camp all week and I've been exhausted every day. Anyway, I just finally got to hear these songs. Merisan's is beautiful, love the vocals. Vom's is "fun" (in quotes since its sound is different from the lyrics, which I like a lot), love the bits in the chorus with the echoes.Niveous wrote: The vote is now in the hands of the eliminated contestants, as well as the judges.
I think I would have voted for Merisan, but it would have been close. Great work, both of you.

Re: Nur Ein XIII Final Round "The End"
One final Nur Ein podcast for this year - Ben and I picked our favorite song from each contestant. There's not much talking - straight to business. http://podcast.songlander.com/?name=201 ... finale.mp3
Ben and I will continue podcasting while Nur Ein is on hiatus, but it will obviously not be Nur Ein related.

That was a great listen, really fun to revisit some of those earlier songs. Excellent choices, not always the ones I would have gone for but all songs I was very happy to hear again!

Re: Nur Ein XIII Final Round "The End"
I originally wanted to feature our favorites from each round, but there were too many! So I picked my favorites per contestant and Ben made the ultimate call. I think if I were to make different picks they would be:
* Vom Vorton - Hazardous Waste
* Rob - Trial By Fire (tough call - but I think this one really exhibits Rob's strengths the most.)
* Grumpy Mike - Never Knew the Guy (pop > intensity)
Other memorable favorites:
* Owl Chemist - Never Knew the Guy (we picked the more musically interesting one, but these lyrics are fantastic)
* Inflatable Vegetables - Internet Sensation (flirting over frozen food...)
* Carlo - 3:20 (ahh, such cute cute people)
* Cavedwellers - Never Knew The Guy (alternate shadow entry)
* Matchy Matchy - Trial By Fire (but THIS. IS. FINE.)
* DJ - 3:20 (scary A.F.)
* Mandibles - 3:20 (maybe should have picked this one. Tough call)
* Merisan - Hazardous Waste
* Pig Farmer Jr - 3:20 (shadow entry)
