Song Fight! Turns 20
Next year in June Song Fight! will turn 20 years old. Whoa! I'm trying to brainstorm about cool things to do all year to celebrate that. Got any ideas?

Let's make an album. Let's press it on vinyl.
Somehow determine which classics to redo.
Have the original artist direct which musicians they'd like to help in the recording.
I assume "What we need more of is Science" would be a likely title to make the cut.

Re: Song Fight! Turns 20
An obvious thought you've probably already had, but adding a 20 Years Ago Today spot on the front page.
A bunch of 20/20 themed contests or posts or front page mentions. We could do a vote on our favorite 20 whatevers.... collaborations, songs, fights, fighters....
Have a coverfight that draws from those voted favorites.
It'd be cool to have a list of the top vote getter for all 20 years. The fight with the most votes or entries per year, the song with the most votes.. the fighter with the most votes per year. I don't know how easily it'd be to compile that information, but it'd be cool.

Yes! That ones a definite. I added the "15 years ago" so adding 20 should be pretty straightforward (barring any unforeseen gremlins lurking in the Song Fight code ).Pigfarmer Jr wrote: ↑Sun Sep 15, 2019 3:13 pmAn obvious thought you've probably already had, but adding a 20 Years Ago Today spot on the front page.

Re: Song Fight! Turns 20
Most of that stuff is easy to generate from the Jukebox. The fight with the most votes is "Romantic Cheapskate" and the song with the most votes is MC Frontalot's song from that fight.Pigfarmer Jr wrote: ↑Sun Sep 15, 2019 3:13 pmIt'd be cool to have a list of the top vote getter for all 20 years. I don't have a UI for getting the artist with the most votes but I could do that with a database query. Here are the top 21 artists with the most cumulative votes. This is of course only counting fights for which the votes were recorded properly in the archive and also it's grouping just by specific band name so it's not lumping together all the entries somebody did under all their different names. Prominently MC Frontalot (solo) and MC Frontalot feat. Brad Sucks are not in there combined with MC Frontalot feat. Badd Spellah (that total would be 1143). BSS is #1 and Paco and other "most submitted" folks crowd the top, showing it pays to stay in the game for the long haul.

Re: Song Fight! Turns 20
That's cool. Can you easily find the information by year? It would be super cool for each year to have their own Top 20 list, but if nothing else, it'd be cool to see top vote getter per year for each category: Fight, Artist, Song. But maybe that's overkill?
A list of each year with the fight with the most entries, the artist with the most wins and the song with the most votes might be a great way to keep up on how the fight has changed over the past two decades.

Re: Song Fight! Turns 20
If we're doing a compilation of re-doing "legacy" SongFight tracks, I would love to revisit some of the early Kompressor entries...as I learned about this place due to a couple of his tracks memeing their way around back in the aughts.

Re: Song Fight! Turns 20
I sure don't belong on that list talent-wise. Man!
What about re-visiting early/first titles, in original or adapted ways. Or a happy birthday song with a chorus of hundreds joined in. Or trying to recruit not been around in a long timers back. Or special sidefights long forgotten or abandoned. I participated in one where you picked who you wanted to cover one of your songs. Not saying that one, but you get the idea.
Maybe post classic board reviews, scathing or bootlicking, or controversies, fueds. Some kind of duel between top artists of all time?
Be nice to see the boards more active. Says the guy that is shamefully absent in writing reviews lately.

I mean I feel like phpBB forums in general have become a forgotten corner of the internet. Says the guy who was here a bunch in 2006-2008, 2010 for a bit and then...almost nothing for most of this decade.Paco Del Stinko wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2019 9:53 am

Is there a public awareness campaign? I tried posting about us on /r/wearethemusicmakers the other day and may have gotten us a single recruit.

It’s an acquired taste you know? A group of musicians actually producing content and not just talking about gear or how to break into the industry.
More like a drawing/illustration community I think.

Did I really just get slapped across the face by a pair of white gloves? Oh, its ok. They're just kids gloves.
Can any of you computer geniuses put together a collage of SF! participants? Like a giant Sgt. Pepper type thing, or faces only? Lotta work, I'm sure, but might be neat.
Yeah, I get that facebox and all that are where things are now. Basically instantaneous and whatnot. Just seems, I dunno, sad or wasteful, that this wonderful site could slip away. Or something. Time marching on, and all that.

Re: Song Fight! Turns 20
Hey even in the years I wasn't participating under a vast assortment of monikers, it was always comforting knowing songfight still existed. I hope this place never goes away!
Are there any *decent* avenues by which we could get this place traction? Obviously reddit comes to mind but that place is ADD hell for maintaining visibility.
Maybe we just need a breakout star like hawking or frontalot to appear again. I doubt it'll be me though :p

Re: Song Fight! Turns 20
Songfight does have a fb page. I'm one of the admins and I see people liking it on a fairly regular basis. What we don't have is someone who is posting often enough to make a blip on the fb radar. I assume the same is true for twitter and instagram. I would think that if you really wanted to get Songfight more attention, you'd need some kind of social media manager.

Re: Song Fight! Turns 20
I like the idea of old schoolers doing a side fight... or the idea of having a fight in which we recruit old schoolers to do a song.
Old titles reimagined (slightly twisted or repurposed) for the 2020 celebration sounds cool. Or maybe have a fight in which we have multiple titles again... sounds like it'd be a pain to organize.
And if we are highlight old board posts... who is gonna go through all of that mess to get the juicy stuff?

To me it seems like nearly all of those likes are coming from spam/bot accounts (e.g. a bunch of random folks from who appear to be from the Philippines or Africa who have little-to-no content on their personal accounts). :/

Re: Song Fight! Turns 20
Honestly, it isn't defined. Anyone that participated enough to get to be known by the community (yes, vague) that hasn't participated lately. If it's a side fight with ONLY old schoolers then you'd have to define it... maybe the first 10 years? But honestly, I like a tribute fight in which everyone participates where we actively seek out and invite anyone who has participated in the past but hasn't done so recently. A homecoming if you will.ken wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2019 12:49 pmI'm curious who qualifies as old schoolers for you. 2000-?Pigfarmer Jr wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2019 12:37 pmI like the idea of old schoolers doing a side fight... or the idea of having a fight in which we recruit old schoolers to do a song.
Yeah, a homecoming. I want a homecoming fight. Everyone who ever participated is invited to do a song. I want to see lots of songs. A homecoming tribute fight.

People who left a long time ago but we're around well enough to be remembered? Well, I'm not sure how to go about getting ahold of Blues Manufacturing Facility or any of the other organizations of genre production.

By the way, in an attempt to get more visibility for this place I've been going through various songwriting/music-making subreddits and posting a thread about this week's contest since it just went up.
Hopefully it results in some entries!
