‘The Dregs’ sounds like an 80’s sitcom set in post-apocalyptic middle class America.

Says the fellow who namedropped Mahavishnu last fight, ha! I actually wann't aware of them, as I'm more into Post-Bop and Free Jazz when it comes to "jazz developments of the 60s". I'll check them out!

If you're from "Near Atlanta" you ought to know the Dregs. They're from Georgia. They are maybe more famously known as the Dixie Dregs. You know Steve Morse and crew. They dropped the "Dixie" for their last 2 albums in the 80's. In the 70's they were the Dixie Dregs. "What If" is the classic album, "Ice Cakes" is the classic song.

This is fantastic! I will happily continue checking out this discography! Technically I'm not from Atlanta, I'm a transplant...grew up bouncing between east TN and central KY before a short stint in South TX, which thankfully ended and led me to where I am now.glennny wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2020 10:14 amIf you're from "Near Atlanta" you ought to know the Dregs. Anyway, I'm definitely going to be in this round and am pretty inspired to make something not depressing at all by this title, so expect a Phlebia entry that doesn't read like a psychotherapy session. Yay!

You got me. Mine's in the same situation. I'm not sure it's super original but maybe it'll sound original to y'all? My recording days got eaten up by two family members being hospitalized on the same day in two different cities. At least they were only 150 km apart...

I spent a bunch of time trying to learn to play the spoons but that's as far as I've gotten on this one so far...
hope everything is ok with them sorry to hear that.Æpplês&vØdkã wrote: ↑Thu Jan 23, 2020 3:00 pmYou got me. Mine's in the same situation. Re: Drinking from (The Dregs prefight)
Hey, I wrote something tonight about post-apocalyptic middle class America! On ukulele, because I know that's going to go over GREAT. And now I have to decide if I want to ruin it with a spoon solo and additional instruments.

I'm going to try... definitely going to attempt using the acoustic mode... and test to see if the swell mode works in another part of the song as well...

Re: Drinking from (The Dregs prefight)
I was gonna do a spoon solo, but at this point I think it would be a spoon solo for the sake of a spoon solo. It did change how I considered and made my song though, which in my book is the whole point of the optional challenge.

Re: Drinking from (The Dregs prefight)
I sent in something last night.
Also, my guitar fund is almost enough to buy the starstream if I want to. I just don't know if I want to. Will it be a cool tool to have or just a toy that sits in the corner? I'm conflicted, tbh.

Re: Drinking from (The Dregs prefight)
I think it is goofy and sounds goofy, but it depends how much you want to make weird noises, and/or switch around in a live setting, or practice without an amp. Sound-wise, I know you have nicer electrics and acoustics.Pigfarmer Jr wrote: ↑Fri Jan 24, 2020 1:13 pmI sent in something last night.

My gear isn't especially nice, but I still think my Tele sounds nicer for pure electric guitar and my acoustic sounds better for pure acoustic guitar (and the sustain and feel are really different from a real acoustic). But I'm liking the option of making all these extra noises with it without having to buy/store/learn to play various other instruments (I busted out some Unexpected Sitar at practice last night, which was fun!) and mainly I'm liking it a lot for no-fuss, quiet practice or writing sessions.
My husband bought a sitar pedal for his guitar recently and that was like $200+, I think; it's more powerful but also has a steeper learning curve. I also don't think he's actually used it since he bought it aside from first trying it out. My guitar was $300 and has sitar plus all that other stuff included! But of course it's hard to switch mid-song, unlike with pedals. I honestly wouldn't pay MSRP for this, but so far I'm happy with the discounted price for the needs it meets for me.
I'm not entirely sure I wouldn't have been better served saving my money and getting just a boring but high-quality guitar with no bells and whistles... but the practice possibilities are really the tipping point for me.
My husband, who is about 1000 times better and more experienced with guitar than me, thinks the guitar is ridiculous and sounds bad, fwiw. So there are certainly some dissenting opinions. If you're really considering it, see if you can get your hands on one to try out first. I'll continue to disclose where I'm using it in songs, at least until the novelty wears off, so you can always kind of judge from that too...

Re: Drinking from (The Dregs prefight)
Okay, drums recorded, bass recorded, lyrics written..gonna need some post editing, a guitar track, some synths, and oh yeah, vocals. Highly unlikely I'll hit the deadline, if only cause my toddler won't let me, but I may be able to make it work within 48 hours? We'll see. I'm about six months out from part/fulltime daycare for the toddler being a realistic option financially -- for now I can just dream of having several uninterrupted hours of recording time! If only I could splurge more on gear instead. Oh well, priorities.

So far from the lyric thread:
Songs that mention shit: 3
Songs that mention cream: 3
I am one of the three in both cases.
